A Serbian Film
Starring: Srdjan Todorovic, Sergej Trifunovic,
Plot: Miloš is a semi-retired porn star and lives with his wife Marija and six-year-old son, Petar. His brother Marko is a corrupt police officer who envies Miloš' life and is attracted to Marija. Marija is curious about her husband's past and is concerned about the family’s income. Lejla, a former co-star, offers Milos a starring role in an art film directed by Vukmir, an independent pornographer who wishes to cast Miloš for his powerful erection. Having already caught Petar watching one of his films and not informed on the details of Vukmir's film, Miloš is hesitant to participate and continue his career, but accepts to secure his family’s financial future. Little does Milos know is that his future and his families future all come down to a contract. This contract will forever change Milos and his surroundings. Milos steps into the underground porn arthouse that quickly becomes unexplainable.
My Review and Thoughts:
An eight millimeter snuff film of the mind. A nightmare born out of the darkness of sexual depravity. The darkened animal waiting to hunt. The animalistic garbage that exits and flushes, is the best way to describe this film.
How far can a film go. This is the shock, controversial and disturbing nature that Cannibal Holocaust, Salo 120 Days, The Exorcist, caused, back in the day, yet this is far beyond those films. This is that modern nausea, that modern filth that stains the very reality of true shock value cinema.
Very few movies can cause the emotions in the human body to truly question themselves at what they are seeing. I have seen maybe a handful of movies that cause that affect and now what was shown in vivid detail on film in this movie can be added to that list. When I first saw Cannibal Holocaust I experienced a feeling of dread, sickness as if what I was seeing was murder being filmed and how they depicted real animal torture and death caused that stir inside me. Very few movies have given me that mentality to want to call the cops until now yet again.
That turning of the gut, that questioning voice inside your mind on just what it is you are seeing, your own mind is betraying you because it can not grasp if its real or if its fake. This is that film that pushes the reality to the edge and then over. Its a film that not only shocks but its a film that says something.
Now there are countless worthless shock films that create themselves just to shock and they fade away because in reality there is no point or story to them. A Serbian Film has the shock and most of all the darker natured story of sexual depravity. It has the twisted darker side of the human nightmare come to reality by focusing itself into the taboo of just how far sexual nature can be pushed.
To bring another darker sexual movie to compare to this would be Salo 120 Days of Sodom that not only shocks but makes a storied statement, an underlining political and human view point of mans hidden power of control and alter what it wishes. A Serbian film showcases without remorse those disgusting unthinkable sexual urges of the darkside, of a Jeffrey Dahmer mind; of a Ted Bundy reality or your neighbor next door.
How far will humans go to get there kick off sexually. Leather, S&M, Objects, Animals, Gore, Torture and Rape, children, what is the limit of the forbidden mind of the ID? This movie is truly a mind rape of cinema, an eye opening experience that destroys all logic and creates its own set up of human nature through actions.
Sergej Trifunovio plays Milos who gives possibly one of the most mind numbing performances I have ever seen not necessarily in acting performance but in action performance. What he does and displays on screen is something no other actor or at least in my knowledge has ever done. I can not imagine what he was thinking at the time the camera was rolling.
Sergej has guts, has passion for creating a memorable role that no matter how controversial it is, it will never fade away into obscurity because it sticks out as a nightmare that is not darkness of sleep but a nightmare that pulls itself from underneath the rug that society has swept under to hide.
Something I want to caution the viewer with is there are many versions of this film. The total uncut film which I am reviewing is 104 minutes. There is a version that most have seen and that's 103 minutes, trust me a minute out of this movie is everything. There is also a 99 minute version that I have seen floating around and takes away five important shocking disturbing minutes that I feel sadly destroys some of the basis of this modern little masterpiece of shock. Make sure you read and check into which version you are watching because the 104 minute version is the must version to capture the artistic darkness that is supposed to be displayed.
Child abuse, child rape, necrophilia, murder, fetus rape, just to name a few that graces this storyline. This is a dark arthouse film that makes a splash in more then shock value but with a psychological defilement that gives the viewer the ultimate nightmare turned real.
I highly recommend this film for its original idea. ITS SHOCKING NATURE. I can say with all honestly that no one under 17 should see this and to make my point I have never said that about any movie.
I really don't know if any movie can push itself beyond what A Serbian film has done. I think they have created the modern shock movie of this generation. I always say that and yet another movie comes out and floors me. A Serbian Film takes it's rightful place alongside 120 Days, 1981's Possession, Cannibal Holocaust, Nekromantik, Funny Games 1997, Anti-Christ, Men Behind the Sun, Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door, Irreversible, Martyrs, In a Glass Cage, Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer, Calvaire, Singapore Sling, Human Centipede 2.
A Serbian Film is what a flawless and artistic natured film is all about. It showcases and creates a bitterness and yet the bitterness taste fowl yet also lingers on just how awesome and disturbingly great this film is.
A Serbian Film is a must see modern shock masterpiece. I walk away from this film with twisted emotions. A Serbian Film is thought provoking, gut wrenching, eye closing perfect original shock entertainment at its finest.
