There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane
Plot: The Accident made national headlines: a suburban
mother drove the wrong way on the Taconic Parkway in New York and crashed
head-on into an SUV, killing herself and seven others. In the aftermath, Diane
Schuler was portrayed as a reckless drunk and a mother who cracked. But was she
the monster the public made her out to be…or the perfect wife and mother that
many say she was?
My Review and Thoughts:
Sometimes actions cause tragic reality. Sometimes a choice
can lead to horror’s that are unthinkable. To start with I want to get off my
chest my personal viewpoint when it comes to drinking and driving. If you
choose to drink and drive and those actions cause death then you are a murderer
simple as that. There are no excuses because you choose at the start to drink
in the first place, therefore you knew what could happen.
People that drink and drive and then murder are no different
than those who choose to murder without drinking and driving. To me drinking
and driving murderers are even worse because they know there actions beforehand
can cause death and yet they still recklessly choose to become an executioner without
regard for the law.
This is a wonderful amazing touching and very tragic
documentary. Sadly the outcome is grim. A loving mother ends up killing seven
people and herself because of stupid actions. Not only did she kill three grown
men but she killed four beautiful children that never got to grow up and live
there life.
The tragedy is known as the Taconic State Parkway Crash and
it happened in 2009. It was Sunday July 26th, in New York when Diane Schuler
drove her mini-van 1.7 miles in the wrong direction on the parkway. There she
hit an SUV. She killed herself, her daughter and her three nieces along with these
gentlemen in the SUV. Only survivor her young son.
This documentary is a tragic ordeal to watch. Many grieving
families left behind. Diane’s husband Daniel was at a loss for words. When the
truth comes out in the toxicology report he refuses to accept it even though it
was the truth.
Sometimes person’s actions lead to horror’s and
unfortunately no matter how wonderful a person is, a wonderful person can still
do something stupid that leads to something so heinous that yes the public
needs a monster to pin it on. The toxicology report showed Diane was drunk and
high on marijuana while driving her daughter and three nieces and her son all
under the age of 12. Her son would be the only survivor of the act.
This documentary focus’ on her husband in trying to figure
out what went wrong. He refuses to accept she was drinking and smoking. He does
not accept that she simply decided to drink Vodka and smoke weed that something
had to alter her mind or drive to do what she did. The documentary is very
informative and disturbing and sad.
There is no great outcome, no happy ending. A mother killed
seven and injured three and no matter how horrible that sounds it’s the truth
and one must accept and move on. In this documentary it’s a sad example in
showing that people have a hard time facing the truth and realizes stupid
actions, causes horrid outcomes.
You as the viewer can see and feel the mixed feelings, the
turmoil in Daniel’s voice is mixed with hatred and anger toward his wife. He tries
not to show it but you can see it. The media fed into creating a monster and
they made Diane a beast in the public view. People are angry. Innocent life was
taken, children where basically slaughtered and sadly the public need monsters.
Is the public wrong in demonizing Diane, yes, but they have
a right to demonize her actions. What she did was thoughtless and destructive
and unforgivable. She decided to risk not only her passengers who might I add
where all children, but also every single person that day without regard of
safety or responsibility.
This documentary takes an in depth view of the subject.
Interviewing those who swerved to avoid getting hit. Those who pulled the
bleeding battered and slaughtered children from the wreck. It showcases the
investigation and moment by moment time line. Camp ground, McDonald's, gas
station and then death. This film showcases the horrible images of the
aftermath in detail.
There is a great mystery in that day. There is great missed
moments. There is massive unanswered questions. Sadly those mysteries will remain,
those questions will be un-answered. All realities don’t have truths. All
truths don’t have explanations.
Here is a theory: Diane was stressed, she didn’t show it.
She was camping with five kids. Weekend over, five kids all in a small
mini-van. Diane had a head-ache, the only survivor her son stated she was
complaining of head pain. So she decided to take a drink from the Vodka bottle
she had brought from the camp ground. She lit up a joint and drank to calm
herself. Drinking and weed mix and Diane is gone. That vacant delusion caused
by her choice to smoke weed and drink Vodka caused the aftermath, simple, yet
tragic.
I highly recommend this documentary as a thought provoking
step inside the grieving aspect of humans. The turmoil of tragedy. This
showcases the human mind not wanting to accept that sometimes loved ones that
you say could never do that, simply do. Sometimes loved ones do things and make
choices that in the end leaves family and friends full of questions, motives
and why this and why that.
