Olive Films Blu-ray Breeders (1986)

Breeders (1986)

Company: Olive Films

Starring: Teresa Yvon Farley, Lance Lewman, Frances Raines, Natalie O’Connell, Amy Brentano, Leanne Baker

My Review and Thoughts:

First and foremost, turn your brain off because you won’t need it. Second pop the popcorn and enter into a world of low budget, drive-in flare that this film belongs in. This is an old 80’s cheesy B-grade wonderment of pure senseless entertainment. This is for the diehard fan of cheese cinema at its cheesiest. Look no further to satisfy your late night, Ghoul Hosted Drive-in cheesy mastery then 1986’s Breeders. Olive Films has done it again by giving a wonderful Blu-ray outlet to this notorious B-movie. A lovely product that makes this film shine, if that’s possible. It’s probably the only time this film has looked as good.

The plot is simple. There are five women who live in Manhattan. Each one raped by a mysterious creature. Police investigate which leads to an underground subway system no longer in use. To add to the: “Oh my god horror”. (Smirks and speaks deeply) “The truth is more horrible then they imagined”. This alien creature is impregnating woman with its offspring, “Oh the humanity of it all (smirks)”.

Directed and written by Tom Kincaid. Kincaid is a very interesting soul. He is a gay film icon and has been accepted into the GayVN Awards Hall of Fame. He has directed and produced many Gay adult films from the 70’s and 80’s. Most famous for The Kansas City Trilogy of gay porn films under the directing name of Joe Cage. This trilogy consisted of Kansas City Trucking Co., El Paso Wrecking Corp., and L.A. Tool & Die. He left the gay adult directing world in 1985 and moved onto film. Now his none adult films is probably what he is known for in the B-grade wonderment of fans. If you’re not a fan of B-movies or lower budget style of cheesy cinema, then you don’t understand the affection these movies have upon fans of B-grade cinema.

He directed such god awful beauties like 1986’s Robot Holocaust, and 87’s Mutant Hunt, among others. He has a natural talent at creating cheesy cinema. I am personally a B-movie fiend, and enjoy these over the top pieces of forgotten cinema. Kincaid moved back into the adult gay porn world in 2001 and still produces and creates these orgies of sex for the fans of gay porn cinema. Interesting to note is in 2011 he was the Gay Director of the Year at XBIZ Awards, which is an adult entertainment award ceremony.

Now 15 of the actors in this film, Breeders, where mainstays in Kincaid’s directing. The 16 actors, Teresa Farley, Lance Lewman, Frances Raines, Natalie O’Connell, Amy Brentano, LeeAnne Baker, Matt Mitler, Adriane Lee, Mark Legan, Dan Geffen, Pat Rizzolino, Owen Flynn, Doug Devos, Michael Zezima, Norris Culf, and Ed French. Each one was in two or more of Kincaid’s low budget films.

Ed French who plays the character of Dr. Ira Markum also did the special makeup effects for Breeders. A little trivia for lovers of Horror and Sci-fi cinema, French is a known man behind the scenes of many films. He is kind of a makeup guru looking at his resume. From Nightmare, Amityville 2 The Possession, Sleepaway Camp, C.H.U.D., Exterminator 2, The Stuff, Creepshow 2, Prime Evil, Lurkers, Vampire’s Kiss, The Guardian, The First Power, Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, Rejuvenatrix, Terminator 2, Star Trek The Undiscovered Country, Hellraiser Bloodline, The Midnight Meat Train, most recently Cooties and American Sniper. He has a vast array of makeup and special effects knowledge. He also continued to work for Kinkaid on his low budget films of the 80’s such as Mutant Hunt and Riot on 42nd Street. A classic makeup artist that deserves accolades and praise for being a hands on artist.

Now something of a surprising reality considering this is a low budget B-grade film. This was remade in 1997 under the same name.

This lovely Blu-ray honors this over the top film with class. Breeders has all the over the top acting, and dialogue that a B-movie lover could want. Cheesy effects, and awesomely bad, yet brilliantly created makeup. Now this was released onto DVD in 2001 by MGM. Thankfully for lovers of B-movies, and B-grade cinema, Olive Films has released this on Blu-ray for the first time.

Audio/Video:
1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. Compared to other releases of this film, the Blu-ray by Olive Films stands out as a better product.

Overall:

A fine example of pure B-movie bliss. Geared to the diehard fan of cheesy cinema. This is a B-movie lover’s wet dream of everything over the top.

Olive Films released another priceless product, and gave the modern world a blu-ray for this ultra-cheese feature. Alien creature, naked women, blood and slime, lead to a great Drive-In popcorn flick. Late night bliss that only the 80’s could do, and now you can adventure once again into this Chessy ooze, thanks to Olive Films.
