My Review and Thoughts:
My Rating: 3.5 out 5
This is great little film with great performances. The movie comes off strong in this reality. The interaction is what captures the viewer as they
watch these unique and interesting characters come to life on screen.
You can’t not mention actor James Caan. Caan really needs no
introduction in the cinema movie world. Movie buffs will always know his name.
Performing and acting in some of the great films of all time. Acting in films
that have garnered cult like following’s. From 1971’s dramatic Brain’s Song, to
1975’s musical Funny Lady. To the one and only The Godfather series. I will
always personally remember him for three favorite performances, the amazing and
very underrated 1981’s Thief. The one of a kind and possibly one of the
greatest suspense films, 1990’s Stephen King’s Misery, which I will always
remember his pain. And the odd-ball sci-fi Alien Nation from 1988. Caan has a
great ability to be the perfect tough guy, or bad guy. His ability to express
his emotional attitude no matter how strong it is, he builds his characters, owns
them, and literally you love or hate his persona of those characters.
Starring as your main female lead is the beautiful and
stunning and all around perfect actress Marsha Mason. Mason is a woman that
knows her parts and creates her parts in away the viewer knows the character at
hand. I have always personally felt that she has never gotten the limelight
that she deserves. I think her talent sticks out and is something always to
praise. Starring in many features that stick out for 1977’s Audrey Rose to 1977’s
The Goodbye Girl, to 1986’s Heartbreak Ridge. She is a multi-talented actress,
from TV series, to TV movies, to major feature films. It was wonderful seeing her
again in this film.
The plot is about a lonely Navy sailor who happens to fall
in love with a hooker. While in love he becomes a surrogate father figure for
her son while he is on extended leave. The reason why he is on extended leave is
his service records have become lost. So begins a love affair and a dramatic reality that unfolds on screen.
The chemistry between all three is what stands out in this
feature film. Marsha Mason and James Caan is pure perfection together. The
young Kirk Calloway who plays the 10 year old son has a total perfection that showcases brilliant performances when
both Caan and him interact.
This is directed by a great director. A director that doesn’t
have a lot under his belt but the few he has are stand out films. He directed one
of my all time favorite drama films the amazing 1981’s On Golden Pond. Another
stand out film he directed is the amazing one of kind film 1979’s The Rose. Who
can forget the classic John Wayne film The Cowboys. Mark Rydell has a touch
with cinema, bringing certain films that really stay with you. He not only was a
director, but also was an actor starring in many TV series in the 50’s. He is a
director that is often forgot about, but the films, such as the ones I have
mentioned should make his ability be known. He is a true visionary of cinema,
and I feel his feature films show that reality.

Yet again Twilight Time has mastered this department. The
movie has never looked any better. I remember seeing this on VHS a while back
and the quality was just plain unmentionable. Now this high quality Blu-ray, transferred
to 1080P is truly a golden ticket. The video is crisp the audio is spot on
fantastic.

Isolated Music Track: Another example of this film is the
music displayed and performed by John Williams who needs no introduction and
was a master music composer that left the world with a great, vast brilliance,
and love of music. He has composed and worked on many upon many films and TV
projects in his life. Sadly, this master passed away but left an amazing range
of music which can be heard throughout his vast career of films. His music is
still used today and rightly should be. Master John Williams creates amazing
soundtracks that are created into ultimate and magically excellent music
experiences.
Audio Commentary with Director Mark Rydell. This was a
wonderful listen. It’s always great to hear about the feature film from the
director himself. I was thoroughly entertained and truly felt this was a
fantastic listen for any movie buff wanting to learn more about a feature.
