My Review and Thoughts:
My Rating: 3.5 out of 5
This is my first time seeing this film, what better way to
see it than on a wonderful Special Edition, 1080p High Definition Blu-ray. I
always love discovering new film experiences especially when they are brought
out on High Quality products and Twilight Time never disappoints in that
department. So, this was a new film experience, plus a great experience in
showcasing a High Quality product.
This drama slash romance was directed by Raoul Walsh. That
surprises me, in that never seeing this. I am familiar with Walsh, I enjoy his
vast career of cinema and thought I had seen most all his work, I guess some
how this one slipped by me. Well what I can say, I am only a human loving movie’s
or seeking out every movie possible and trying to view the world of cinema one
picture at a time. Raoul was a total genius when it came to cinema. He had a
long wonderful career of over 50 years in the business creating so many
wonderful pieces of cinematic history. What made him stand out is he not only
was a director, but also was a multi-talented guru of film. From producer,
writer, actor, working in the music department, editor and many other titles.
He was and lived cinema. All one must do is look at the total number of directed
films, shorts and so on. Over 130 features. He started mastering this talent
all the way back in 1913 and did so up until 1964. He left a world of wonderful
movie experiences that stay the test of time and The Revolt of Mamie Stover I
can say is one of those experiences. Twilight Time also honored him by bringing
out another one of his features films on Special Edition Blu-ray, Gun Fury.
If I had to choose a director that I believe created or
became a part of the movie world as a living entity it would be Raoul Walsh. I
am a huge fan of his silent films. I am a huge silent film fan period. He directed
so many silent’s, one of my favorites, the one and only, The Thief of Bagdad
starring the amazing masterpiece worthy actor Douglas Fairbanks. He worked with
all the great actors and actresses. Just to name a few of his masterly director
accomplishments and mentioning some of my personal favorite films of all time,
the one and only 1939 classic The Roaring Twenties starring the icon James
Cagney. The masterpiece 1941’s High Sierra starring the icon Humphrey Bogart. 1941’s
They Died with Their Boots On starring the sexy one of a kind Errol Flynn and
equally sexy goddess Olivia DeHavilland. And the one and only, masterpiece of
40’s film, the film I often watch at least once a year, the iconic 1949’s White
Heat starring yet again the master James Cagney in what I consider his finest
role alongside the goddess of cinema Virginia Mayo. So that should tell you
everything you need to know about Raoul Walsh’s directed ability. He was a
total master and one director of films I watch repeatedly. And now I can
experience The Revolt of Mamie Stover over and over again on this fine,
perfect, high quality Blu-ray brought out by Twilight Time. If your ever in
Hollywood give honor to this genius of film by visiting his Star on the Walk
Fame at 6135 Hollywood Blvd.
The plot goes, Mamie who happens to be a prostitute in the
1940’s San Francisco era is as you would guess run out of town as World War 2
is growing in calamity. Mamie heads and settles in Hawaii her dream is to start
new. There she meets a love. Hoping to wash away her past. But it is her past
that battles with the new romantic setting. The War has brought the sailors in
numbers and Mamie finds herself right back doing what she wanted to rid herself
of. Mamie hopes to leave herself, her prostitute lifestyle, and find a better
means of survival, so begins her journey with her past not far behind.
Starring the one and only Jane Russell. The iconic beauty
and strong powerhouse of acting really needs no introduction to any movie
lover. What can be said about Jane Russell that has not already been said in
other peoples write ups, nothing really. She was a true goddess on the screen.
Creating so many iconic characters throughout her career. It’s shocking that
she only was in a little over 30 performances, you would think such a memorable
icon like her was in hundreds of pictures. Put it’s the pictures that she was in,
that truly stand out and make you remember her iconic embrace of cinema.
Also starring the one and only Richard Egan. Egan was a true
man’s man. A handsome strong actor that could create his roles and make one
believe his parts no matter how big or how small they were. Looking back on
Egan’s career it was a career that was hard in the reality of getting the
stardom he deserved. I still don’t think this wonderful actor got all the
stardom he rightly deserved. I feel he should have been a household name, but
it took to the late 50’s and 60’s before he really became a stable star of the
pictures. I always loved seeing him in what ever he acted in. I always thought
growing up watching all the old films that he was a dynamic performer and he
shines in The Revolt of Mamie Stover.

Never really any flaws in this reality when it comes to
Twilight Time Blu-ray’s. The audio is sound perfection. Very crisp to the ears.
The video, the colors are vibrant and spot on perfection. Both equal a
wonderful reality of perfection.

You get the all-important Isolated Music Track. The music
composed for this feature film is done by Hugo Friedhofer. He was a
multi-talented musician that worked on all kinds of style of cinema from, Drama,
to action, to lower budget Cult like films, such as I Married a Monster from
Outer Space. His music is still being used today 26 years after his death, that
should show you some reality of his masterly ways. He has worked in the music
department on over 267 films. Composed for over 170 films. And has been used on
14 soundtracks including most recently for the powerful little gem of a film
2017’s The Shape of Water. His masterful ways shine in all things music and
cinema. It was wonderful hearing this music as an isolated soundtrack. A great
extra honoring this man of music.
