The Device (2014)

Plot: Abby and Rebecca Powell haven’t seen each other since
a traumatic event in their youth ripped them apart. Reunited for the first time
in over a decade, the sisters take a trip to spread their mother’s ashes at a
secluded lake. As the sisters reconnect and try to heal old wounds, something
waits in the nearby woods. A strange object. Little do the sisters realize that
this object is actually a device, one with a purpose too horrible to comprehend?
My Review and Thoughts:
Truly mysterious and very original. Really dug deep into my
mind and the idea of the unknown.
I absolutely love the sound effects. The humming vibration
sound almost reminds me of a metallic object being struck. This film brings
science fiction clarity. This is brilliantly done in that creepy atmospheric
darkened state.
This took me back to the beauty and the creepiness of The
X-Files.
Starring some very talented young actors and actresses. The
two stunningly beautiful Angela DiMarco, Kate Alden. Both are truly talented
and create there personas in equal quality. DiMarco truly makes you believe the
part of Abbey. Haunted by nightmares and images she is able to create a
perfection in her emotions. Alden is no different as Rebecca making you
experience her ordeal and gives a truly logical and gifted reality to her
character which she brings to life for the viewer. Both actresses chemistry
meld together in a believable form. The viewer can relate and feel the personal
reality of both personas.
David S. Hogan is equally fleshed out in his role as Calvin
the main male role. He brings the character to the viewers in that any man
watching can understand and relate to the reality and ordeal his character goes
through. Basically put he gives life to Calvin.
This is directed and co-written by Jeremy Berg. I first got
wind of Berg by watching his direction on the little indie horror The Invoking
(2013) which was later re-titled Sader Ridge which he also co-wrote. Berg has a
sophisticated style of directing. He adds somewhat of a darker color atmosphere,
a grayscale image to his films. I love the way his movies are pieced together
and seem to flow with an ease and yet mixed with mystery. I love the way they
come together in a complete form of story by image and actions.
Truly a well-crafted science fiction drama. Brilliantly done
in the story and in the scenario. It's a sophisticated science-fiction style
almost with a creepy sense of horror and the aspects of fear as
it plays with the viewer. The atmosphere taking place is so well captured
through the performances and the cinematography that it tells a story in
itself. The surrounding of the isolation plays with the viewer. The overall
concept created through a dark mysterious style of story taking place on screen gives the viewer a complete entertaining experience.
The dark unknown story gives it the beauty of a
truly we'll made film. I really enjoyed the direction. The whole movie came
together as a complete beginning, middle and end. I was satisfied. I was
thoroughly entertained. I absolutely enjoyed the concept. Truly gifted
performers in all departments from acting, direction, lighting, sets,
cinematography and sound effects. The whole movie became a truly interesting
experience of film. This is one of those movies that showcases why I love
cinema, why I love movie making and why I love the people that perform and
create truly entertaining and thought-provoking sophisticated film.
Highly entertaining. Highly recommended. Truly an original
experience that took me on a mysterious journey of an object and the three that
encounter it.
