The Eternal Return of Antonis (2014)

Starring: Christos Stergioglou, Maria Kallimani, Yorgos Souxes, Theodora Tzimou

Plot: The movie is about Antonis who at one time was a famous TV personality but now, as time has passed, his fandom is falling and he feels lost and forgotten and unwanted and so in a serious yet comical way he stages his own kidnapping to get attention once again. Soon the reality of the ordeal changes everything and sends him on a journey half’s parts comedy and half parts emotional drama.

My Review and Thoughts:

Absolutely pure entertainment at its best. A wonderful drama mixed with comical wonder and most of all stunning acting and direction. A pure delight for any fan of cinema. This became an instant favorite of mine and is something that will stand the test of time as being original and truly a film to talk about and recommend. This is a foreign film from Greece that is lovingly being released on DVD by the awesome studio that shines in capturing thought provoking, original, forgotten and over looked cinema; the one and only Brinkvision. A company that gives films like The Eternal Return of Antonis a chance to shine. They understand the beauty of film.

This is a film directed and written by Elina Psikou. This is her first feature film as stand alone director. She has assisted as director on other films but this is her debut and does she forever shine in bringing this to the masses of cinema lovers. I was thoroughly entertained and enjoyed the whole film from start to finish. Her master at the lens showcases what she has as a director to offer. This film is something to experience in all its dramatic ways. This is a film that leaves an impression upon the viewer after it's over.

Starring the wonderful Christos Stergioglou who is an extraordinary performer. He starred in one of my favorite films 2009’s Dogtooth. He is truly a talented man and he plays the lead of Antonis as pure and original and most of all believable.

The Eternal Return of Antonis first made its screening debut at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. To me this is 88 minutes of hilarious and eye opening artful cinema that digs deep into emotions and leaves a feeling that this movie is a superb masterpiece.

The film is comical, but there is an underlining dramatic reality inside the story, that leaves a darkness and also a heart touching persona to its satire structure. You the viewer, become a part of Antonis and can’t help but follow along and feel for him, as you become apart of the overall simple, yet, deep story taking place.

I highly recommend this film.
